If the current state of environmental affairs has gotten you down and you’ve given up hope for the future of Earth, you may have considered that starting a new colony on Mars is humanity’s next best option. Though it sounds like something from a science fiction movie, interplanetary colonization is actually on the horizon thanks to a not-for-profit organization called Mars One, that’s currently accepting applications to be one of the first people to step foot on the Red Planet.
You may expect that in order to be eligible for a mission to Mars you would have to be an engineer or experienced astronaut, but with Mars One that’s not the case. Everyday people from around the world can submit an application to be considered for the mission, set for takeoff in 2023. The only catch? It’s a one-way trip. Once you leave Earth, you won’t be coming back. Check out the recruitment video below:
So far there have been more than 165,000 applicants from around the world, and the deadline for applications is August 31, so if you want to be considered you’d better act fast. You can view the current applicants at applicants.mars-one.com.
