I was so excited to receive my Wean Green Garden Pack Lunch Cubes set in the mail. I had long been searching for a glass alternative to my plastic Ziploc tupperware disaster, and I could not be happier with what I found.
The Garden Pack comes with 4 Lunch Cubes of the same size, with brightly coloured lids in “blueberry”, “raspberry”, “carrot”, and “pea”.
When I first removed the lids on the cubes, the lid’s rubber seal was stuck to the rim of the glass, which made me question whether the seal was supposed to be on the glass or in the lid (it’s supposed to be inside the lid). This was the only problem I have thus-far encountered in my fairly extensive use of the product. I have since hand-washed, dishwashed, microwaved, and frozen these tough little containers, and they hold up to every test wonderfully, just remember to remove the lid when microwaving!
The snapping mechanism on the lids makes for a tight and secure hold, ensuring my healthy snacks (including runny apple sauce) stay in the container, and not the bottom of my bag. I couldn’t help but think back to the days where I’d have to put my plastic tupperware in a plastic baggie, and then secure it with 3 or 4 elastics to have the same level of ease about my food being safe.
Thinking of all that wasted plastic now makes me glad to have these environmentally aware products in my home instead. Luckily for me, Wean Green glass containers are 100% recyclable (so is their packaging), should I ever need to get rid of them (doesn’t seem likely), and they also donate 1% of their profits to environmental organizations! How could I not be excited to use their products.
The one difference between plastic and glass food storage containers is their weight. The Lunch Cubes are significantly heavier than their plastic counterparts, which is definitely something to consider if you will be carrying your lunch long distances on public transport or by bike. That being said, I am willing to put up with a bit of extra weight if I can help keep even some plastic out of our landfills.
Another thing I would like to have seen would be some way of stacking the containers for storage. As it is, since all four cubes are the same size, they don’t nest into each other, and so they take up far more space in my drawers than they probably should. I know the company has other container packs that do stack, but this pack in particular is not one of them.
All said and done, these containers rock. I feel fun and trendy whipping them out at work and school, and I am always confident that I won’t have any spills when they’re around.
I would give this product 4 out of 5 stars, because although they are safe, secure, and good for the environment, there is always room for improvement, and I’d love to see these as a stackable set.
