Geely electric trike

The McCar is a hot new eco friendly vehicle being manufactured by Chinese automaker Geely, and one accessory that comes with the car may give it an edge over competitors like the Volt, Leaf, and i: it has an electric scooter stored in the trunk that charges while the car drives.

Eco Friendly Car and Scooter

Presumably invented for those days when you get stuck with a parking spot at the very back of the lot, the Geely McCar and its complementary scooter can either be seen as a handy companion vehicle, or an unnecessary vanity ride. Regardless of what you think of the pair, the fact that they are all electric, and therefore emissions-free, makes them a great eco friendly vehicle combo.

The electric car comes with a 12 kWh battery that can drive for 93 miles on a full charge, while the scooter can drive for 18 on its smaller battery.

How the Geely McCar could be practical

Although it may be impractical for most drivers to carry around an electric scooter that might not get much use, for people who normally would use a wheelchair the Geely McCar provides a great driving alternative. Rather than getting out of a traditional car and setting up a wheelchair, they can get out and drive wherever they need to for extended periods of time in the accompanying electric scooter.

Another of the more practical applications of the electric car/scooter duo is on a golf course (as in the banner picture above). Although some courses may frown upon it, by toting your clubs around on the small scooter you could save time and energy when you’re playing your next back-9.

Compared to other electric cars

For any regular driver who is considering an electric car and wouldn’t normally use the scooter, the added weight would in fact make the car less efficient, and therefore less eco friendly. Something to keep in mind when you’re out shopping for your next vehicle. Instead, you may want to consider the Chevrolet Volt, Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi i, or any of the other Top 10 Green Cars of 2011.
