This year marks a special addition to one of the best known rally races in the world, the Paris-Dakar rally. Much like the Indy before it, the Dakar rally is adopting a new category specificaly for ethanol fueled vehicles.
The campaign has been spearheaded by the winner of the 1993 Paris-Dakar rally, Klever Kolberg, whose passion for sustainable fuel and vehicles gave him the incentive to pursue a new team and new vehicle for the 2010 race. Kolberg’s vehicle of choice is the 2010 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport model equipped with flex-fuel technology.
The special ethanol-fueled category has also been adopted by the Paris-Dakar rally with the help and support of the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA), which plans to be a leader in ethanol development in the future.
Although the ethanol category of the rally may not catch on as quickly this year, Klever Kolberg’s pursuit of a sustainable race may be the first step for a much bigger picture down the road.
Be sure to tune into the rally, starting on January 1st and taking place in Argentina and Chile.
Best of luck to Klever Klonberg and his ethanol fueled team.
