Taking a boat from California to Australia isn’t exactly a safe journey. Not only are there many areas without any communication at all, but there’s also the dangers inherent in being in the ocean. Now, imagine making that same journey in a sailboat constructed out of plastic water bottles.
Taking a boat from California to Australia isn’t exactly a safe journey. Not only are there many areas without any communication at all, but there’s also the dangers inherent in being in the ocean. Now, imagine making that same journey in a sailboat constructed out of plastic water bottles. Crazy, right? But David de Rothschild is doing it for the sake of recycling. The boat is 60 feet long, and except for the metal masts, everything on the boat is plastic. The zero emissions trip is expected to set sail in April, and is expected to take more than 100 days, including stops in Hawaii, Tuvalu and Fiji. To keep the boat afloat, 16,000 bottles will be held in the ship’s hull, and wind turbines and solar panels will charge the battery packs to keep laptops, GPS and a smart phone charged up. Hopefully his trip will succeed in raising awareness about recycling plastic bottles.
