An innovative recycling scheme that converts food waste to compost in 11 days is being launched by a private property management service in Toronto, Canada.

A joint venture between Bentall Kennedy‘s property management team and Hop Compost and Waste Solutions will, over the next three years, convert hundreds of tonnes of food waste into reusable soil for landscaping purposes.

The program is predicted to save around one million pounds of food waste from ending up in landfills by the year 2020.

Bentall Kennedy will begin rolling out the service in 2018 to 18 of its properties in the Greater Toronto Area.

Hop uses patented technology to develop Canada’s first inner-city compost facilities, where this waste will be converted into nutrient-rich organic compost.

The initiative originated through a partnership with Waste Solutions Canada, a national management firm in the waste and recycling industry.

Hop Compost’s CEO Kevin Davies said the technology would eliminate nearly 85 percent of hauling to save food waste in Toronto.

“The finished compost will be ready in 11 days, free of methane and odour, bringing a new era of efficiency in the local food system.”

Hop uses its facilities to operate high-efficiency urban waste collections and has saved an estimated 10 million pounds of food waste from landfill.

Its technology converts this waste into Canada’s most nutrient-rich organic compost, boosting crop yields for local organic growers.

Michelle Brown, Vice President, Property Management for Bentall Kennedy, commented her company was taking a new approach to waste management solutions to bring greater benefits in the long run.

Citing the organics program as “exciting”, she said Bentall Kennedy is the first property management company in Ontario to engage with Hop Compost in this project.
