One of Hollywood’s biggest stars is setting a great example for going green while on the road. Tom Hanks can often be seen driving around L.A. in his hybrid Scion that is outfitted with something called eBox to run solely on electricity.

Tom Hanks’ eBox Electric Car

It’s certainly not a Volt, and doesn’t look as pretty as the Leaf, but the custom-made electric car driven by Tom Hanks is one of the most eco friendly vehicles around. It’s not the exact car pictured above, but it’s one just like it. Hanks’ electric car is a modified version of a Scion XB that packed on 625 lbs of lithium-ion batteries to turn the hybrid into a full-blown electric car. The extra battery power lets the eBox electric car drive for a range of between 100 and 120 miles between charges – not bad considering the Volt can get around 50 mile range out of a full charge.

This is Hanks’ second electric car, his first being an electric RAV4 that one of his employees drives – and which recently passed the 50,000 mile mark on the odometer.

Celebrities going green in different ways

While celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Ian Somerhalder are contributing to Billion Acts of Green, and Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez are working with Unicef on their Tap Project, Tom Hanks is spreading the word about electric cars, and he has been doing it for quite some time.

Check out the videos of Hanks promoting the eBox Electric Car technology below:

After watching these video clips, it’s a wonder Hanks hasn’t volunteered to be the electric car spokesman for the auto industry!
