Costa Rica has recently become a very popular destination for eco-tourism. Eco-tourists look for environmentally sustainable tours, hotels and resorts, especially as regards the use of carbon fuels. The Costa Rican CST (Certification for Sustainable Tours) has five levels of achievement awarded by the Tourism Board. Arenas del Mar has implemented a wide range of environmentally-friendly practices including buried electricity supply to protect local wildlife, low energy lighting, composting and recycling, solar-heated water, water-efficient toilets, chlorine-free water for swimming pools, organic coffee, the use of electric cars on the property, and soap and other materials produced from leftover cooking oil from the kitchen. Personal care products at the facility are organic and bio-degradable, and water bottles are reused.
Parador Resort Spa
This facility is high on the list of sustainable ventures, using recycling, composting, beach cleanup, energy and water saving programs, bio-friendly detergents, an extensive use of rainwater, and a local reforestation program.
