Green Credentials: Companies Who Changed Their Image To Become Eco-Friendly

‘Going green’ is the hot statement on everyone’s lips at the moment. The world are starting to see the damage we are causing as a global society; making an effort to make a difference before it is too late. However, who are the people invoking this change? Politicians, worried citizens and researchers sure have a lot to say on the subject. In fact, the real forces behind going eco-friendly are large corporations and businesses that have realised the massive error in their ways; resulting in a massive image ‘fix’. Here are five companies who have changed their image (and at least some of their practices) to be seen as more eco-friendly:


Global coffee giant Starbucks are making a real effort to be seen as eco-friendly through a couple of their newest policies. Starbucks are ruled by their own ‘bean-to-cup’ approach, which implicates fair trade at every link of their global chain. Since 2006, Starbucks have saved nearly 100,000 trees by using coffee cup sleeves made entirely out of recycled paper. In 2013, Starbucks have also started to sell one dollar reusable cups to customers as a way to reduce wastage.


Ten or fifteen years ago, McDonalds wouldn’t have been a name you would associate with being eco-friendly. However, McDonalds have done much  to change their public perception from what was an evil deadly corporation to now a fast food chain which cares about the environment. For one, McDonalds now work alongside PETA to improve how their food is produced and handled – which was one of the main issues, with an increasing number of territories sourcing their produce locally. McDonalds also uses an eco-filter when tackling the issue of packing; creating strategies to reduce overall packaging and increased the use of recycled materials.


You might not be familiar with the company Anheuser-Busch, but you will be familiar with one of their popular brands….Budweiser! In recent years, A-B have found a great way to do their bit for the environment by reducing waste; 26 million metric pounds of it! How? Simply by cutting off an inch of the bottles! Good news for us is that we in fact don’t lose a drop of the beer.


Coca-Cola is a brand leading the way forward in eco-friendly polices. Coca-Cola has three set goals in terms of going green; water stewardship, climate & energy protection and sustainable packaging.-Coca Cola are now a company dedicated not only to improve their own eco policies, but actually to help the world around them.  Check out their website for more information on how they are doing this.


British supermarket chain TESCO have utilised their customer base in effort to be seen to be going green. The grocery chain have done this by offering reductions and savings to their customers who bring their own bags into the store instead of using their ones made out of recycled plastic. This is known as an eco-incentive scheme. On top of this, TESCO also use as much ‘green energy’ as possible; using wind-power at their distribution plants, trucks fuelled by bio diesel with a sterling emphasis on recycling. TESCO strives to cut ‘carbon costs’ of each product that it sells on its shelves, sourcing items locally if possible.

As you can see, it is these big corporations which are one of the main driving forces behind the global frame of mind in going green. With more and more companies wising up, the biggest of corporations cannot be seen to be doing nothing; leaving the world a much better place (or perhaps a less worse one) for us than it looked to be ten or so years ago.
