The six winners for the Third Annual SEED Awards for Excellence in Public Interest Design—which recognizes design projects with social, economic and environmental impacts that “create truly sustainable projects and positive change in the world” —have been announced.
One of the six winners is the SAGE Affordable Green Modular Classrooms from Gervais, Oregon which addressed a variety of issues including: civic engagement, long-term health & low cost maintenance, strengthening community, wellness, and environmental sustainability. The winning idea was the following:
The SAGE Affordable Green Modular Classrooms address the need for a “healthier” version of the modular classroom which has become standard in over-populated school districts – and tackle the issue of making green design affordable. The classrooms are designed to the economic, social & environmental conditions faced by most Oregon & Washington schools and offer sustainability for cost-savings in long-term operation as well as a healthier environment that promotes learning.
The project was chosen by judges because it is easily replicable and can be applied to a “variety of locations to address the need for healthy and productive educational environments.” The one caveat: The jurors critique that the true performance of SAGE cannot be determined without data from occupied classrooms.
All winners of the SEED Awards will receive a a $1,000 honorarium, be featured in The SEED Field Manual, be profiled online, and receive an all-expense-paid trip for one team representative to present at the annual Structures for Inclusion (SFI 13) conference, taking place March 23-25, 2013 in Minneapolis.
