The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has set aside $41.5 million in funds to use in sanitation science and technology research, with the goal of bringing safe and sanitary disposal of human waste to the ⅔ of the human population that currently do not have it.

In the process, we hope they are able create a more sustainable way to flush, and one that can get our societies out of this water-wasting habit we are entrenched in.
