To wear a shirt that says “I don’t recycle” out in public these days goes beyond ignorance, it’s borderline insulting to everyone who does recycle. That’s why the first thing that pops into your head when you see it may be “you gotta be kidding” – and you’d be right, because they are. It’s an elaborate recycling campaign organized by the state of Georgia, and they hope that by pointing out how ridiculous it is not to recycle, it will encourage people to step up who haven’t already.
Here’s a couple excerpts from their fictional blogs:
I hear all these tree-hugging types telling us we have to recycle to save water. Seriously?!?!?! Dude, there’s like billions of gallons in the ocean. And it looks just like it did when I was a little kid and saw it for the first time.
Some people actually say they don’t understand why I think we should be looking for another planet to live on! What’s up with that? It’s simple: instead of having to go to the trouble to recycle all our bottles and magazines and stuff, we just keep an eye peeled for another planet that we can move to when we use up this one’s resources! Duh! How cool will THAT be. I’m going to get in line early to snag a piece of waterfront property! Spend my days fishing and jet skiing! Sweet. That’s why I’m so psyched to find this planet!
It’s actually pretty funny, and not a bad way to appeal to students. Check out the full site, and all of the fictional characters created in the You Gotta Be Kidding campaign.
