When viewing a list of the many benefits that insulating your home can offer, the large energy bill savings will more often than not be near the top.

However, for those looking to ‘go green’, it is less commonly known that Home Insulation will also allow you to significantly reduce your carbon footprint and helps to protect the environment.

A home that is not adequately insulated will lose up to 60% of its heat, and consequently will burn more fossil fuels to generate the heat that is being lost through the loft and walls. This is damaging to the environment, as burning fossil fuels results in Carbon Dioxide (CO2) escaping into the atmosphere and contributes to global warming.

Having Loft Insulation and Cavity Wall Insulation installed can help to offset these issues. Heat loss will be prevented, meaning that less fossil fuels will need to be burnt to compensate and subsequently will help to protect the environment.

As a result, both Loft and Cavity Wall Insulation remain the most effective energy efficiency measures available for your home and will also lead to large-scale carbon savings.

To put the carbon savings into context, a household with Loft Insulation can expect to cut CO2 emissions by 800kg per year while a household with Cavity Wall Insulation can make a carbon saving of 610kg. A household with both Loft and Cavity Wall Insulation can cut CO2 emissions by an enormous 1.4 tonnes each year.

In addition to the green benefits, as mentioned earlier, there are big energy bills savings to be gained by having Cavity Wall and/or Loft Insulation installed. This is because an insulated property will better retain heat, meaning that the heating can be left off for longer.

It is estimated that 42% of UK households with traditional lofts can still benefit from having Loft Insulation installed. An average size loft will take an hour, to an hour and a half to insulate and will generate energy bill savings of up to £175 per year.

Coincidentally, 42% of all UK properties that are suitable for Cavity Wall Insulation have also not been insulated. Cavity Wall Insulation takes two to three hours to install and will lead to energy bill savings of up to £135 per year.

Home insulation is an energy-efficient and low-cost way to boost your green credentials and make significant reductions on your energy bills. If you act fast, there are also free grants currently available to all private households in the UK.
