Bathroom remodeling for a greener world and a greener wallet

Eco friendly bathroom

Going “green” is all the rage in pop culture right now. However, in the bathroom, going “green” can be easy, inexpensive, and save you money by cutting some of the waste out of using a bathroom on a daily basis.

The biggest waste in a bathroom is water, especially hot water. Luckily there are several options available to lower the amount of water used in a bathroom.

To solve the hot water use problem whether or not you are doing a bathroom remodel is as simple as changing your shower head to a low flow shower head. These shower heads use much less water per shower than traditional shower heads and can be easily put in a bathroom remodeling plan or a simple update for a do-it-yourself type of person.  A new shower head saves you money in two ways. The first and most obvious way this saves you money is a lower water bill. The second way a low flow shower head saves you money, and the less obvious way, is on your utility bill. Since you are using less hot water, less water has to be heated, leading to using less energy use in the heating of cold water.

While your water heater is not a part of your bathroom, it does play a big role in what happens hot water wise in your bathroom. Whether you are doing a bathroom remodel, bathroom update, or just looking to find easy ways to save money, insulating your hot water heater is a good idea.  Insulating your hot water heater keeps the heat in, eliminating some of the expense of heating water. Every time the water in the heater starts to cool, the water heater then has to use energy to heat it back up to keep the temperature in the rang that is set on the thermostat. However, if you are remodeling your bathroom or your water heater is going to need to be replaced soon, it may be a good idea to consider purchasing an on demand water heater. These water heaters are more expensive than traditional water heaters, but they heat water only as it is needed, eliminating the heating and cooling cycle that happens in a hot water tank.

Lastly, the toilet you choose to use in your bathrooms can save a lot of water over the course of a year. There are two different types of toilets that will reduce your water use. The first is a low flow toilet. These toilets use less water than regular toilets, do not cost much more than regular toilets and have many style options to choose from. The second type of toilet is one that has two flush buttons: one for solids and one for liquids. These toilets are still low flow toilets, but they use even less water for flushing with liquids than a conventional low flow toilet. However, these toilets are more expensive than either traditional or low flow toilets. As with all of the suggestions above, toilets can be installed at anytime, but the easiest time to install a new toilet is when you are remodeling your bathroom.
