5 Green Ways to Keep Your Toddlers Room Toxic Free

It can be difficult to keep your entire home free from hazardous toxins and chemicals. However, infants and toddlers are most affected by dangerous toxins and chemicals, and you need to do everything you can to promote a healthy environment for your entire family. The following are five helpful tips to ensure a toxic-free room for your toddler.

1. Brand New Items

Brand new items such as a mattress, furniture, bedding or toys can often give off that “new car” smell and may be an indication that the product is releasing hazardous toxins into your child’s room. Parents can either select organic items that are chemical and toxin-free or you can choose to air the products outdoors in the fresh air before bringing the items inside.

2. Washable Playards

Another great way to keep your toddlers room free from toxins includes the washable playard. Between sticky fingers, drool and spills, your toddler can get into a variety of messy situations. The playard, like one found at InGenuity a Bright Starts Company, is an easy way for parents to wash away dirt, bacteria, toxins and germs without a lot of hassle. The playard’s fabric unzips in a matter of seconds and can be tossed in the washing machine for a quick clean up. When it’s clean and germ free, you can simply zip it back up again.

3. Ditch the Harsh Cleaning Products

You don’t need to use cleaning products with harsh chemicals and toxins to get a room clean. Natural alternatives such as vinegar and baking soda can give your toddlers room a thorough cleaning and remove germs and bacteria. If you’re using other “green” products, you need to read the list of ingredients to ensure that they are chemical-free, and they won’t be hazardous to your children or their environment.

4. Eco-Friendly Paint

Eco-friendly paints are ideal to painting and decorating your toddler’s room. The product also emits low odor into the air, unlike your typical paints that can often promote dizziness and headaches. They also don’t contain hazardous organic compounds and toxins. The non-toxic paints are made naturally using clay, milk and lime and can be typically found at home improvement stores and environmentally-friendly specialty shops.

5. Air Purifier

Opening the windows in your child’s room is an excellent way to enjoy fresh air and remove harmful toxins. However if you live in an area where you can’t always open the windows due to cold and inclement weather, an air purifier can do an outstanding job of purifying their room. Look for an air purifier with an activated carbon and HEPA filtration system to get rid of pollutants, odors and dangerous chemicals.

Parents have a huge responsibility in trying to keep their children safe. A primary part of that concern should be in keeping your child’s room environment toxin-free. Fortunately, parents can take an active role and lessen their toddler’s exposure by reading labels and using natural products to clean and purify their room.
